Here is my list of the top luxury hotels in Istanbul. The thing that makes these hotels worth mentioning is their special setting, architecture, services and the general experience provided. I haven’t included these five hotels in the lists below.

The Peninsula Istanbul has recently become one of the most interesting new luxury additions to the hotel scene in Istanbul. It is located in Karakoy, in the complex of Galataport. The hotel consists of restored historical buildings and contemporary parts.
There are indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spacious spa, restaurants available. The restaurant named Gallada, the roof top restaurant, created by the chef Fatih Tutak, is the part of this great hotel’s contribution to the contemporary Istanbul culinary scene.

Best for: 5-star hotel comfort in Besiktas
Shangri-La Bosphorus occupies a former tobacco warehouse next to Dolmabahce Palace. The building gives the hotel much more personality than its exterior suggests.
What tourists often overlook: Don’t try to use the hotel as the only base for the stay. There are cafes, restaurants and local life in Besiktas worth exploring on foot.

Hagia Sofia Mansions Istanbul is the most convenient hotel in the center of Istanbul for those who plan to do a classic sightseeing itinerary. The hotel consists of several historic mansion buildings, and not of the usual hotel building.
Stairs are used in parts of the hotel, so make sure you can comfortably use them before booking the hotel. The spa of the hotel has a restored historic cistern in it, but you won’t notice it while searching for the hotel. (Hilton)

Best for: traditional Istanbul feel
Sirkeci Mansion is the hotel with intimate atmosphere and will be a good choice for travelers who want to explore Istanbul on foot. In addition, it will put you near the Gulhane Park, Topkapi Palace and Egyptian Spice Bazaar.
My tip: Good choice if you want to explore historic Istanbul but still have small and cozy hotel.
Common Misconceptions
The first mistake is booking Bosphorus hotel only for the view. View is great, but if you have only two days and want to visit the historical peninsula every morning, view may lose to the location.
The second mistake is staying only around Sultanahmet and not exploring the city. Sultanahmet is great, but Istanbul is a lot larger. Spend at least one afternoon in Karakoy and Galata, and one more in Besiktas or Nisantasi. Try also to visit the Asian side if possible.
