Best Time to Visit Turkey: A Seasonal Guide

Best Time to Visit Turkey: A Seasonal Guide

Early April morning in Istanbul allows walking in Sultanahmet comfortably and seeing all of the sights of the historic center without getting too tired by the heat of the city, and then after a couple of hours, you can already cross the Bosphorus and enjoy your lunch by the water and further exploration of the area, avoiding the heat of mid-summer.

Being a professional guide in Turkey for more than a decade now, leading visitors to Istanbul, Cappadocia, Aegean and Mediterranean shores, I have learned that there is no such thing as the best month to visit Turkey. The best dates to go to Turkey largely depend on your preferences and whether you want archaeological sites, comfortable city walking, hot-air balloons, beaches, hiking or winter landscapes.

In this post, I will describe the seasons of the country in order to help you select the most appropriate time of your traveling to Turkey.

Best Time to Visit Turkey for Comfortable Sightseeing

When traveling to Turkey for the first time and making a tour which includes Istanbul, historical sights and inland places, the best months to visit are April-May and September-October.

These months offer better conditions for comfortable city walking compared to the hot season, and in these months all of the main attractions are accessible. Istanbul is particularly pleasant in spring, when you can combine walking through historic districts, visiting bazaars and museums as well as enjoying Bosphorus tours without worrying about heat all the time.

April can be decorated by bright colors of tulips in Istanbul parks and public areas, although exact dates may vary from year to year.

September and October can be perfect if you prefer warmer evenings and the opportunity to combine city walking with the coast. The sea remains pleasant till the end of September, especially in Antalya and some areas of Aegean shore.

Antalya has a typical Mediterranean climate. March to October are the months that suit tourists well. Average maximum temperatures are given as about 30.9 C in June, 34.1 C in July, 34.2 C in August and 31.2 C in September.

If the list of the sights includes Ephesus, Pamukkale or any other large archaeological sight, shoulder season becomes particularly important. Most of the experience at such sites is spent outside, and walking through the hot sun of summer along the ruins can be pretty exhausting.

Best Time to Visit Turkey for Beaches and the Coast

If you plan your holidays to Turkey with the aim of swimming, enjoying the beach days or having a resort vacation, the period from June to September becomes the best choice.

July and August are the hottest months and the busiest as well. They are perfect for people who enjoy hot summer weather, but not so comfortable if you want to combine beach days with several hours of walking through cities and visiting attractions.

Antalya is particularly good for a traditional summer vacation. The coastal area gives it a warm Mediterranean climate, and the nearby Taurus mountains add an element of drama. Official destination information states that summer temperatures can reach up to 40 C.

If you are going to Turkey in order to swim and walk at the same time, May and September are my recommendations.

You can spend a part of the day on the beach, visit nearby ruins and villages and enjoy dinner outside without organizing your whole day around the hottest hours.

Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye follow the same general seasonal pattern, although local weather can vary. If your vacation takes place in July or August, book accommodation and boat excursions in advance, especially if your dates are fixed.

A frequent mistake is the belief that September makes everything coastal dead and deserted. Some resorts remain quite active and busy in autumn. If you prefer to avoid busy atmosphere, consider the differences between resort centers and coastal small towns when booking your accommodation.

Also, keep in mind the kind of your vacation. If you spend your holidays mostly at the resort, July and August are perfectly fine for you. If you are looking for a road trip with archaeological sites, villages and hiking, May, June, September or October will be more comfortable for you.

Best Time to Visit Turkey for Cappadocia

Cappadocia is one of the places where spring and autumn are particularly good to visit.

April, May, September and October usually provide a good compromise between comfortable day and cool mornings. The landscape of Cappadocia is perfect for walking, and moderate temperature allows spending several hours in the region and exploring all of the amazing valleys and viewpoints.

The landscape is one of the reasons why weather plays a bigger role than the temperature itself in this place. Warm sunny day with temperature of 30 C can seem quite comfortable, but climbing and descending of valleys’ trails for several hours can turn out to be much hotter.

Hot-air balloon flights are affected by weather and aviation conditions, so it is necessary not to make the whole plan of your vacation depending on a certain morning. Hot-air balloon rides at sunrise are considered one of the signature experiences in Cappadocia.

This is the reason why I recommend staying in Cappadocia at least two days. In case of bad weather on a certain morning, you will still be able to go sightseeing on the next day or simply spend the day in the region’s valleys and viewpoints.

Winter in Cappadocia can be particularly picturesque. When covered with snow, volcanic landscape creates the atmosphere that is absolutely different from that in other seasons.

But the winter is also the season that requires greater flexibility. Weather, including snow, wind and low temperatures, can affect road travels and outdoor activities. So leave extra time and avoid tight schedules.

If hiking is the main reason of your visit to Cappadocia, spring and autumn become particularly convenient. Make early starts, take a bottle of water with you and remember that temperature can greatly vary from sunrise to afternoon.

Best Time to Visit Turkey by Season

Spring, from March to May, is one of the best options to plan a vacation in Turkey. Istanbul, archaeological sights and Cappadocia become more comfortable compared to peak summer. March can still be cold, while April and May are usually warmer.

Summer, from June to August, is particularly good for beach vacations and evenings on the coast. It also provides extended daylight, but walking through cities during peak heat of the afternoon becomes tiring.

Autumn, from September to November, is one of the best times for multi-regional vacation in Turkey. September remains summery in most of the coastal areas, while October usually provides comfortable conditions for city walking and sightseeing. By November, northern and inland areas become colder.

Winter, from December to February, is the season when you need to choose your destinations consciously. Istanbul becomes chilly and rainy, Cappadocia receives snow, while eastern Turkey becomes attractive for skiing.

Winter in Turkey is the best time for skiing or snowboarding sports. Ski season in Erciyes(Cappadocia) usually lasts from mid-December to early May, while ski season in Palandoken(Ardahan) can last from November to May.

The key point isn’t to think about Turkey as a country with one national climate. One person, skiing in eastern Turkey, visiting Istanbul museums and relaxing on the Antalya coast, can experience three totally different climates within one week.

What to Book and Pack

The dates of your vacation should affect the things you will book in advance.

If you are planning your vacation in July or August, prioritize booking of the accommodation in coastal areas and intercity transportation because in summer period it can be difficult to find something.

For spring and autumn you will still need to make advance reservations in popular places, but you will have more flexibility.

In Cappadocia, choose your accommodation paying attention to location and not only to price. Choosing accommodation near the sights that you want to visit can save a lot of your time, especially in case of an early start.

In Istanbul, the proximity to transport can be much more helpful than choosing a hotel next to one sight. Hotel near a metro or ferry station can greatly ease your vacation in this big city.

Comfortable shoes are necessary in all of the seasons. Pack light waterproof jacket in spring and autumn, and sun protection in summer.

For Cappadocia, make sure that you have a warm layer of clothing despite warm forecasts. Mornings can be particularly cold.

If your route covers several regions of the country, check the weather in each of them instead of just checking Istanbul weather. This will help you avoid one of the most common packing mistakes: packing beach clothing for inland cold morning.

Make the early morning starts of your sightseeing, spend the hottest hours in the shade or indoors and go outside again in the afternoon when temperatures become more comfortable.

In Cappadocia, try to keep at least one morning free for weather-dependent activities. It can be particularly helpful if hot air balloon ride is one of your musts.

A helpful guide tip is to group your destinations not according to the map distances, but according to climate. If your route includes Istanbul, Cappadocia and Mediterranean coast, check the weather in all of these places and finalize your luggage and schedule.

Simple Recommendation

If you are looking for one simple answer, the best time to visit Turkey for first-time visitor is usually April to May or September to October.

These months provide good conditions for city walking, historical sites, Cappadocia and some coast visits. They become particularly useful if your route involves several regions of the country.

Choose June to September if you prefer beaches. Choose winter if you are interested in skiing, snowy landscapes or quieter cultural itinerary.

And if your dates are already fixed, don’t worry. Turkey can work well in every season if you adjust your route to local climate.

A local guide can help you a lot with seasonal sightseeing planning, making sure that you are not spending the hottest or coldest hours of your day at museums and other indoor sights.
